Having to re-apply lipstick after a meal, drinks or just after an hour or two has passed is one of our biggest beauty bug bears. That’s why we spoke to the experts to discover how to make our lipstick last longer.

Follow these 6 rules for the perfect long-lasting pout:

Prep

Making sure the lips are soft and nourished is crucial if you want a great finish to your lipstick as well as great staying power.

“Brushing the lips with an old toothbrush or a sugar scrub will help shift dead skin cells before you apply colour,” says Grace Fodor, Founder of makeup brand Studio 10.

Apply one of these amazing lip balms afterwards to restore moisture.

Prime

Sascha Jackson, Lead Makeup Artist for Stila UK, is a huge advocate for lip primers:

“I love using a lip primer to help smooth the lips and keep them hydrated. This really helps to keep your lipstick looking fabulous and lasting all day. My favourite is Stila’s Lush Lips Water Plumping Primer – its conditioning shield locks in moisture, and high performance pigments neutralise discolouration of the lips.”

A lip primer will ensure your pout is in a healthy condition prior to colour application.

Line

Every expert we spoke to said using a lip liner was crucial – but there’s a certain knack when it comes to applying liner in order to increase the longevity of lipstick.

“The best way to make lipstick last is to use lip liner all over the lips, then to layer the lipstick on top,” says our very own Beauty Director, Alex Steinherr.

“After you have put the lipstick on then fill in the outside contour line with your liner,” she adds.

Be sure to match your liner and lipstick shades as close as possible.

Powder

“If your lips aren’t dry, powdering them between coats can also help create a ‘sticky’ surface for colour to adhere to for longer,” recommends Grace.
