One police officer was stabbed and another injured after a water fight in London’s Hyde Park turned violent.

Two other people suffered stab wounds in addition to the police officer as the park descended into a “war zone” on the hottest day of the year.

The officers and two injured members of the public were taken to hospital. The police officers’ injuries were said to be “not life threatening”.

Witnesses described a “riot” breaking out near the famous Serpentine lake in the Royal Park as tempers flared amid temperatures that topped 30C.

Police reinforcements were called in when the mood at the large spontaneous water fight turned hostile.

One policeman was taken to hospital after being hit by a bottle while another was stabbed.

Police said at least two other people had been stabbed during the trouble, and officers were still at the scene at 10.30pm.

No arrests have been made and police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “Police in Westminster were in attendance at Hyde Park by the Serpentine from 3pm after a large number of people gathered for a spontaneous ‘water fight.’

“At around 8.40pm parts of the increasingly large crowd become hostile to police and items – including bottles – were thrown towards officers.

“Two police officers suffered injuries; one stabbed and one from a bottle. Both have been taken to hospital for treatment. Their injuries are described as not life threatening.

Emergency services on the scene

“Police are aware of two other people suffering stab wounds. Both have been taken to hospital, and officers await an update on their conditions.

“Officers remain at scene and continue to deal with the incident.”

Shocked witnesses described on Twitter how Hyde Park was “shut down”.

Timi Marcel tweeted: “Hyde Park is a bit of a war zone.”

One woman tweeted: “Good evening to everyone except those who were involved in the motiveless, opportunistic disruptions in Hyde Park today.”
