A meeting between members of staff of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peoples Democratic Institute with the Board of Trustees (BoT) took place in Abuja on Wednesday at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.

The PDP has been in a leadership crisis since its chairman, Modu Sheriff, was removed from office at the party’s national convention held in Port Harcourt last month. However, a Federal High Court in Lagos later reinstated Mr. Sheriff as chairman and ordered the removal the acting chairman, Ahmed Makarfi. Wednesday’s meeting addressed this crisis, with party leaders assuring members that it would soon be resolved.

The meeting, which began at 12:15 PM, had the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Senator Walid Jibrin, and the BoT Secretary, Ambassador Ojo Maduekwe, in attendance.

Other members of the BoT present were Senator Ibrahim Mantu, former Deputy President of the Senate; Senator Stella Omu, former Chief Whip of the Senate, and Air Commodore Dan Suleiman, former Military Governor of Plateau State.

The Director of Administration, Gurama Bawa, welcomed the BoT and members of staff to the meeting and thanked the Board particularly for the gesture and for taking time from their busy schedules to meet with staff of the party, which is the first of its kind in the history of the PDP.

He equally thanked the staff of the Secretariat for holding forth and believing in the party despite the temporary shutdown of the party’s National Secretariat by the Nigerian Police Force due to the crisis that emanated from the National Convention in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The BoT Secretary, Mr. Maduekwe, who spoke after the National Director of Administration, commended members of staff for their cooperation and urged them to continue remaining calm and united irrespective of the current leadership crisis in the party.

He assured members of staff that the crisis would be over soon.

Other members of BoT also spoke, including, Mr. Mantu who is the Chairman of the PDP Concerned Group.

He informed the meeting that the Concerned Group took the decision to hold a parallel Convention in Abuja in order to end the regime of impunity in the party.

Mr. Mantu admitted that the PDP made several mistakes in the past that led to the failure of the party at the polls in the 2015 general elections, but maintained that the party has realized its mistakes and will soon resolve the leadership crisis in order to build a stronger and more united PDP.

He also thanked staff members for remaining united during this trying period.

The BoT Chairman, Mr. Jibrin, reminded staffers that the BoT is the only remaining constitutional organ of the party following the contradictory court orders against the National Caretaker Committee and the dissolved National Working Committee.

Concluding, the BoT Chairman reiterated the reason for their visit to the party Secretariat, stating that the meeting with staff is in compliance with their constitutional role as the conscience of the party and managers of the assets and liabilities of the party, which is inclusive of the staff.

He added that the meeting was called to encourage and reorient staff on the way forward. Mr. Jibrin further announced that the leadership would assume office when they achieve maximum harmony on the issues at stake.
