The Anglican ArchBishop of Enugu Province, Dr Emmanuel Chukwuma, has called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the South-East over the incessant killings of people by alleged herdsmen.

Chukwuma made the call while reacting to the killing of no fewer than 10 people in Nibo community, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State in the early hours of Monday.

He condemned the dastardly act and urged government to stop further loss of innocent lives in the zone.

“The continued attack of our people by herdsman is condemnable and unacceptable. I am really aggrieved.

“We cannot continue this way; and if nothing is done, the South-East will be engulfed by another Boko Haram and possible civil war.

Chukwuma urged governors of the South East states and political leaders to rise up to the challenge.

He also tasked security operatives to be alive to their duties.

“The security men should be at alert always because if they had handled the report seriously, this killing of innocent people would have been averted.

When contacted, the Enugu Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the incident but said that seven persons were killed while six were injured.

He said that the command was in the process of arresting the perpetrators of the act and urged people of the state to desist from spreading rumours that security report was given to them before the incident.
